Christmas in Wales 2026: where to stay for your dates

Compare Cardiff's market, skating and lights with Llandudno theatre, Conwy heritage and a quieter Tenby coast stay.

Short answer

Start with the trip, not the postcard

Choose central Cardiff for a market-and-skating break between 12 November and 23 December; Winter Wonderland continues into January but closes on 25–26 December. Choose Llandudno for a seafront stay built around a booked theatre performance. Conwy and Tenby suit quieter town breaks, not a promise of a large daily festive programme.

The places to compare

01

Cardiff / Caerdydd

Best fit
The largest choice of seasonal events, shopping, food and indoor alternatives.
Trade-off
It is a city Christmas, not a remote Welsh escape.
Move smart
For the market, castle and City Hall programme, favour a city-centre address. Cardiff Bay is a separate base: check your evening return rather than assuming all events are beside the hotel.

02

Llandudno

Best fit
A seafront hotel stay with theatre, shops and a functioning resort centre.
Trade-off
Some headline outdoor attractions are seasonal or weather-dependent.
Move smart
Match a Sleeping Beauty performance to your hotel nights. Venue Cymru is on the promenade; check the actual address-to-venue route rather than choosing a hotel only by 'Llandudno'.

03

Conwy

Best fit
A compact heritage stay with castle-town atmosphere and local dining.
Trade-off
Less indoor depth; Plas Mawr closes for winter, the castle has a short day and holiday closures, and part of the town walls is currently closed.
Move smart
One or two nights is usually enough; pair locally rather than crossing Wales.

04

Tenby / Dinbych-y-pysgod

Best fit
Winter beach walks and a slower coastal break in a real town.
Trade-off
Seasonal closures mean less choice than during summer.
Move smart
Confirm open restaurants and transport before committing to holiday dates.

Decision rules

Use these to break a tie

  1. Choose central Cardiff for several festive activities, but match the stay to each organiser's own calendar.
  2. After 23 December, do not book Cardiff expecting the craft market; after 31 December, do not assume Bute Park's light trail continues.
  3. Choose Llandudno when a booked show and seafront evenings are the plan; choose Conwy or Tenby for a quieter stay you would enjoy without an event.

Before you book

Three checks

  • Book the actual skating, trail or theatre slot before making accommodation non-refundable; a start/end range does not mean daily availability.
  • Reserve holiday-period dining and check hotel meal arrangements, especially on 25–26 December.
  • TfW lists replacement buses for local Cardiff-area trains on 27–29 December 2026. Check the exact route, bus accessibility and final return, and allow extra journey time.

Useful questions

What travellers usually need to know

Where has the fullest Christmas break?

Cardiff has the broadest mix of events, shopping, dining and indoor options in this shortlist.

Which base suits a quiet winter coast stay?

Tenby for a compact West Wales town, or Llandudno for a larger seafront base with more indoor structure.

Will Cardiff's Christmas Market still be open on Christmas Day?

No. Its published 2026 programme ends on 23 December. Winter Wonderland is a different event and is also closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day; check your particular attraction before booking.

Is Conwy a good indoor fallback over Christmas?

Choose Conwy for a compact heritage stay, not an all-weather attraction guarantee. Plas Mawr closes from 2 November through February, and the castle has winter hours and holiday closures. Arrange a genuinely open alternative for your dates.
