Conwy, Llandudno or Betws-y-coed: coast, castle or forest?
Three North Wales bases with very different evenings, transport patterns and access to Eryri.
Short answer
Start with the trip, not the postcard
Choose Conwy for compact heritage, Llandudno for the broadest coastal resort base, or Betws-y-coed for an Eryri gateway with forest and mountain days. Llandudno is the easiest all-weather stay; Betws-y-coed puts the landscape first.

The places to compare
01
Conwy
- Best fit
- Castle, walls, harbour and a compact one- or two-night heritage stop.
- Trade-off
- It has fewer resort facilities and indoor fallbacks than Llandudno.
- Move smart
- The rail-linked centre is walkable; use it for a focused town stay rather than every North Wales day trip.
02
Llandudno
- Best fit
- Seafront hotels, promenade walks, theatre and the widest choice of all-weather visitor services.
- Trade-off
- It feels like a classic resort and is not a mountain village.
- Move smart
- Stay near the centre for station access or toward Craig-y-don for a quieter seafront feel.
03
Betws-y-coed
- Best fit
- Forest walks, outdoor days and rail access into the Conwy Valley.
- Trade-off
- Evening choice and transport flexibility are narrower than on the coast.
- Move smart
- Check the exact bus or rail connection for each mountain day and the final return.
Decision rules
Use these to break a tie
- For a first North Wales weekend in mixed weather, Llandudno is the most flexible editorial shortlist.
- For one heritage night, Conwy is the most concentrated.
- For an outdoors-led itinerary, Betws-y-coed wins only when its transport reaches your chosen walks.
Before you book
Three checks
- Do not assume every Eryri trailhead is close to Betws-y-coed; verify the Sherpa or other final connection.
- Check rail times on the Conwy Valley line for your exact day.
- For Llandudno, choose between station convenience, promenade position and quieter Craig-y-don.
- Check Conwy's castle, Plas Mawr and town walls separately; one advertised joint ticket does not mean both monuments are open.
Useful questions
What travellers usually need to know
Can I visit Conwy from Llandudno?
Yes, they can be paired by local transport, but staying in Conwy gives a quieter heritage atmosphere after day visitors leave.
Is Betws-y-coed inside Eryri?
It is a well-known gateway on the national park’s eastern side; that does not make every part of Eryri a short journey.

Useful official planning links
Check your dates and journeys with official destination and operator resources. These comparisons are editorial guidance, not hotel inspections, live availability or a safety guarantee.
- Eryri National Park: plan your visit
Check which valley, access plan and park guidance match your trip. Do not treat a nearby town as access to every mountain route.
- Transport for Wales: destination and journey planning
Plan your arrival and onward rail journeys for the actual date; engineering work and the final walk to accommodation can change the choice.
- Visit Conwy: towns and current events
Compare Conwy, Llandudno and Betws-y-coed and check the current local programme, rather than assuming their coast and mountain access are interchangeable.
- Castell Conwy: seasonal hours, closures and access notice
Check the castle's short winter day, holiday closures, steep access and the named town-wall section closure.
- Plas Mawr: autumn opening and winter closure
Check autumn dates before making the house part of your trip; its published winter closure rules it out for a Christmas visit.
- Sherpa'r Wyddfa: current published timetable index
Match the bus timetable to your exact Eryri day and final return. Do not carry a summer frequency into winter.
