Where to stay for Eryri (Snowdonia): choose the right side
Compare Betws-y-coed, Llanberis, Beddgelert and Dolgellau by the mountain days you actually plan.
Short answer
Start with the trip, not the postcard
Betws-y-coed is the eastern gateway and strongest car-light shortlist; Llanberis is the direct choice for Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) routes; Beddgelert offers a smaller western village base; Dolgellau works for southern Eryri and Cadair Idris. They are not interchangeable.

The places to compare
01
Betws-y-coed
- Best fit
- First visits, forest walks, eastern Eryri and travellers arriving by rail.
- Trade-off
- It is not the closest base for every Yr Wyddfa route or southern mountain day.
- Move smart
- Build around current Conwy Valley rail and onward bus links.
02
Llanberis
- Best fit
- Yr Wyddfa-focused trips, mountain history and lakeside access.
- Trade-off
- It is a specialist mountain base with fewer big-town fallbacks.
- Move smart
- Confirm how you will reach the exact path or attraction; do not use one generic ‘Snowdon’ pin.
03
Beddgelert
- Best fit
- A scenic village stay for the western side and a slower mountain trip.
- Trade-off
- A car or carefully timed buses may be necessary for the full itinerary.
- Move smart
- Keep the plan local and reserve dinner when seasonal choice is limited.
04
Dolgellau
- Best fit
- Southern Eryri, Cadair Idris, mountain biking and a real market-town base.
- Trade-off
- It is far from the northern headline sights.
- Move smart
- Use it to own the south of the park instead of commuting north each day.
Decision rules
Use these to break a tie
- Name the mountain, path or valley first; then pick the town.
- Without a car, reduce the list and protect the final return.
- In changeable weather, a base with low-level walks and food nearby has extra value.
Before you book
Three checks
- Use Eryri guidance and a current mountain forecast; a named base is not proof that a trail or access road is open.
- Book official parking where required and never assume roadside space.
- Check Welsh names as well as familiar English names when matching signs and routes.
- Match Sherpa'r Wyddfa services to the exact date and last return; the published March timetable index does not establish Christmas frequencies.
Useful questions
What travellers usually need to know
What is the best Eryri base without a car?
Betws-y-coed is the strongest general shortlist because it has a rail station and onward options, but Llanberis may still be better for a specific Yr Wyddfa plan.
Should I stay in one base for all of Eryri?
For three or four nights, choose one side. For a longer outdoors trip, two bases can remove repeated valley crossings.

Useful official planning links
Check your dates and journeys with official destination and operator resources. These comparisons are editorial guidance, not hotel inspections, live availability or a safety guarantee.
- Eryri National Park: plan your visit
Check which valley, access plan and park guidance match your trip. Do not treat a nearby town as access to every mountain route.
- Transport for Wales: destination and journey planning
Plan your arrival and onward rail journeys for the actual date; engineering work and the final walk to accommodation can change the choice.
- Sherpa'r Wyddfa: current published timetable index
Match the bus timetable to your exact Eryri day and final return. Do not carry a summer frequency into winter.
